Fujifilm FinePix XP10 12 MP Waterproof Digital Camera with 5x Optical Zoom and 2.7-Inch LCD (Green)

Stylish little digicam that screams "take me outdoors!"5

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RBALABS3LFOWQ The Fujifilm Finepix XP10 newly available in April 2010 is a stylish little ultra-compact camera that invites you to have fun outdoors while taking pictures. It:

- is waterproof to 10 ft. under water perfect for swimming pools beach snorkeling (note: do not use in hot water!)

- is shockproof up to 3 ft. great for jogging cycling or even letting your baby learn to take pictures

- is freezeproof down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit (-10 Celsius)

- is dustproof

- has 12.2 effective megapixels

- has 5x optical zoom and features a Fujinon lens for great clarity; lens focal length is 36-180mm in 35mm film camera terms

- takes 720p widescreen VGA or QVGA video

- can zoom optically in video mode (but see note on audio recording below)

- is really small and weighs just a little over 5 oz. with battery and SDHC card

- uses SDHC memory card no more xD that was championed by Fuji and Olympus

I bought a green XP10 because I love spending time in the water. I find that outdoors during the day the XP10 takes pictures with excellent clarity and excellent color saturation and contrast. Using fill-in flash in daylight truly enhances the picture. Indoors because the XP10 lacks Fuji's legendary SuperCCD technology picture quality is average for a compact or super-compact camera. It does have two natural-scene modes where it boosts the ISO (light sensitivity of the image sensor) at the expense of increased noise. I bought my XP10 to be used outdoors in the pool and at the beach so I haven't taken many indoor pics.

Video shooting at 720p yields smooth clear HD video clips. BTW video size is limited only by the 2GB FAT32 file size limit -- this means even if you pop in a 16GB SDHC card the longest video clip can only go up to 2GB in file size due to the limit imposed by the FAT32 file system. Video is recorded as motion JPEG in an AVI container so it can be played on many many devices at the expense of slightly larger file sizes than a more compact format like MPEG-2 or MPEG-4.

While you can zoom optically -- a feature that every digital camera should have -- audio recording's volume level is lowered during zooming. Instead the camera picks up some noise from the lens mechanism and that noise overwhelms the ambient sounds you want to record which can be annoying when played back on a large TV. My advise is to use zooming sparingly during video mode. If you want great video recording on a compact digital camera you should get a Sony or Canon or Panasonic camera (be prepared to pay a lot more for the waterproof feature though).

Anyway my sample video clip shows how the camera works under water. The video resolution was set to QVGA (320x240) for easy upload to Amazon but you should be able to see the amazing clarity both in and out of water.

In summary the XP10 is a great waterproof shockproof camera that every water enthusiast should bring along to record fun memories.More detail ...

Olympus Stylus Tough 8010 14MP Digital Camera with 5x Wide Angle Zoom and 2.7 inch LCD (Black)

Its tough but its not great4

I have owned many Olympus cameras in the past but this is my first camera I have purchased from their "tough" line. As advertised this thing looks and feels very sturdy. The seals on it look like they will hold out any kind of moisture and dust and the lens has its own protective shroud and cover to protect it from scratches or damage. The lens also does not extend or retract so dust sand and dirt cant jam it up (which is a problem I have had before). It also has a minimum of buttons to break or stick and it has a very soild body construction. So on a toughness scale of 1-10 the Stylus tough 8010 gets an 11. This camera really is in a class of its own on when it comes to durablity and it is the only camera I have seen my colleagues take with them into combat zones.

On the other hand it looks like Olympus tried to cram all the wrong things into this rugged camera. The first thing you will notice when operating this camera is how slow it is between pictures even with a class 6 SD card in it its write speed seems painfully slow. Don't get me wrong I am very happy Olympus finally got ride of the XD card but it doesnt seem like they've fixed their write speed problems. Picture quality also isnt that great but thats not a major hit given the small lens they are working with.

One thing you find on the camera that shouldn't be there is all kinds of picture editing or "Beauty" features in the camera. This software does an okay job but take way to long to proccess. In my opinion Olympus should leave photo editing to photo editing software on a computer and instead focus on making this camera take better pictures with less lag time between shots.

Another grype is that this camera does not come with an external battery charger you have to plug the camera in to charge it. Why??? For those of us who like to have multiple batteries we now have to buy another charger in additon to the battery. It is also a much bigger pain to leave you camera pluged into the wall/computer than just throwing a battery in a charger.

Over all this camera is great if you plan on going to a very rough part of the world or even swimming with it. But if your just an average person looking for a camera to take good pictures this is not for you. Instead buy a cheaper camera with a better lens and get a good camera case to protect it from everyday life.More detail ...

Canon PowerShot D10 12.1 MP Waterproof Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-inch LCD

Finally a "full service" waterproof camera for all those fun-filled vacations let the kids go crazy!4

So many of our family's vacations are at beaches lakes water-parks or hikes and bringing along the sensitive digital camera has always been a problem. If I carried it then I could not get in water and I spent more time worrying whether the sand would damage it than taking pics of my family. I lost a camera on a Disney Park fun ride when water suddenly splashed into the ride and we were miserable for losing all our pics. With this camera you can drop it in water and not worry about your pics unless you lose the camera (happened to me another time when I fell overboard and dropped a camera in the open sea). I have other cameras that I have been too lazy to review but I am excited about this one so I sat down to write this review.

This is like a regular Canon Camera with all the features and the added waterproof feature. It can be compared to the new SD780 IS which sells for fifty bucks less. The features are similar except that this one is waterproof and bulkier and does not have a viewfinder (not that you can see much through a fogged up viewfinder in humid conditions).

Some great features:

- Good looking waterproof camera "cuteness" is very important I disliked those clear cases that you have to screw on your camera and as one reviewer reported they can still get fogged up

- Rainproof/Waterproof up to 33 ft good for most pools or waterparks

- Freeze proof lens up to 14 deg F

- SMART Auto mode that detects the right scene mode for each shot (works great)

- Digic 4 processor auto shots are nicer than some older Canon cameras optical image stabilization and motion detection to prevent blurring of images

- 2.5 inch extra bright LCD that's covered by a protective surface to prevent scratches and looks good in bright sun

- 3X optical and 12X digital zoom

- Face detection

- "Blink" detection - the camera gives a blink warning if someone's eyes are closed in the picture

- Contrast correction - Can be set while taking picture or even afterward to correct darker areas

- Continuous shooting lets you capture the perfect water shot

- Scene modes - The auto mode does a good job of sensing the conditions but if you want to set a mode you get the choice of - Night exposure Panorama (stitch together shots in one) programmable mode portrait sunset beach fireworks aquarium underwater snow indoor kids and pets foliage long shutter color accent (keep only one color in a pic so the water and jeans will be blue while the people black and white) and color swap (change one color to another swap the color of your boat from beige to red).

Negatives:

- Slightly bulkier than your typical Canon SD it's built for water beach and rugged use and it's rounder shape with no hard edges can take a fall or two

- No threads for filters

- No RAW mode

- No lens cap but the glass shield is scratchproof

The back panel is pretty intuitive and you probably won't need the manual to figure it out. The buttons have been designed for waterproof operations and the zoom in and out is done through buttons on the back of the camera rather than with the shutter button lever like with other Canon cameras. The photo and video mode is toggled through a round button next to the shutter button.

The best thing about this camera? You can give it to your 6 year old to take underwater pics and not worry about it how many other "real" cameras can you do that with?! Now I can float down that lazy river at the water park with my family and take some nice shots rather than running along the edge trying to capture the perfect moment. And the best thing is that this camera works just as well on land. It's the perfect no-nonsense take along everywhere (really every where!) vacation camera.

Liquid Image 5.0MP Video Scuba Mask - Blue (HD321) - Large

Not bad but could be better.4

I just used this for the first time in a Pennsylvania quarry. I turned it on before entering the water and turned it off after I got out almost an hour later. The video quality is very good and it picks up audio well. The images are clear and should be since it's advertised as high definition.

Being this is a first edition I hope a few changes are made in the next version. First when seating the mask skirt under a hood it is very easy to hit the button to change it from video to still image (or reverse) and it can be accidentally shut off. There is a blue or red light (depending whether you are shooting video or still images) that is difficult to see while wearing the mask. It is visible just not clearly. It would be nice if there was a clear display a little lower. Also each time I exhaled the bubbles caused the mask and camera to shake which is clearly visible in the video. As for the scope of view the camera seems to be shooting higher than most divers are really looking. When checking my computer all you see is the top of my console or computer. It would be nice if the camera was even a little adjustable so it can be tilted up or down depending on what the user is doing.

Overall I'd say this is a hit! Even if there are a few negatives I was really happy with this mask. I took it to 75' (not deep) for 49 minutes in 45 degree water and it recorded the entire dive. I can't wait to use it off the Jersey shore for some wreck diving. Now if you can make one to go a little deeper!More detail ...

Vivitar ViviCam V8400 8.1 MP Waterproof Digital Camera (Black)

Couldn't be worse!1

Please note that this is the same as the yellow Vivitar 8400 and see that the one-star reviews dominate. I saw the bad reviews but I gambled and bought this horrible camera. What a joke. We never even got to use it because after turning it on the screen would go grey after only a few minutes and it would freeze up - couldn't even turn it off. This camera wasn't a lot of money but we wound up on our tropical vacation with no underwater camera! Please be smarter than me and notice that the most common ratings for this camera are for only one star. Sure a few people got one that seemed to work but most people did not so odds are you won't either! Don't waste your time and money and don't risk the frustration of not getting what you need for your vacation.More detail ...

Digital Concepts Aqua Shot VGA Under Water Digital Camera (Color May Vary)

Junk1

I purchased this knowing that the quality would be "iffy" at best. However I did think it would at least produce an image similar to cellphone quality. The shutter would only fire randomly and the batteries died immediately as a result making it almost impossible to even get an image. I would not recommend this.More detail ...

Sony MPK-Thh Marine Pack for DSC-T900 + Underwater Accessory Kit

The case is waterproof!5

I bought this case for my Sony DSC-T900 before we went to Jamaica. We already had a waterproof case for my wife's DSC-T100 and are completely happy with it. The case is excellent as far as being sturdy not too bulky and of course waterproof. We went snorkeling multiple days and no problems at all. Water sheets off of the case and you can take clear pictures right after being in the water without even wiping the case off.

BTW I ordered the Waterproof case and Underwater Accessory Kit from ACE Photo Digital on Amazon - very fast service! Product is well packaged as well.More detail ...

Pentax Optio W60 10 MP Waterproof Digital Camera with 5x Optical Zoom and 2.5 inch LCD (Pink)

Excellent camera for parents4

I bought the Pentax W60 six months ago on the way to an indoor waterpark. I wanted something that would be functionally equivalent to my existing Canon SD 870 IS: small and light decent still shots decent videos.

Since then the Pentax has become my default camera.

Pros:

decent image quality

some neat "smart" modes

waterproof and dust resistant means no worries about child-play environments!

Cons:

auto-focus seems to get it wrong more often than my Canon

no one-button swap between still and movie mode

zoom quality seems lower

zooming during video has big big focus issues

short battery life per charging

If I only had one camera for all occaisions those cons might be overwhelming but I also have a Nikon D90 which I use for formal occaisions or highly dramatic scenery. So for my "everyday" use I'm swayed by the robust nature of the waterproof housing.

Let me specifically address the video cons. First my Canon (and all its ancestors) has a simple physical switch to move from still mode to movie mode. The Pentax has a menu system which requires me to push one button navigate over a few places and push again. Under pressure of capturing a kid in action that's a recipe for failure. Second the zoom may be less nice because of the inability to have a lens poking out the front but I am puzzled by what seems to be the complete failure of the auto-focus when I zoom during a video.

Depending on your needs you may weigh these issues differently. For me this camera is great solution.More detail ...

Weekend Underwater Disposable Camera

Shipping took too long1

Camera did not come from Amazon; another company was involved and shipping took longer than usual to receive the product. Shipping took 10 business days and after I left on vacation. Tried to return it when I returned and the company would not accept it nor would Amazon assist. Guess I will save the camera until my next vacation as long as it doesn't expire. Don't know how well it works since I never got the opportunity to use it. Pretty frustrating.More detail ...

INTOVA IC800 8.0 Mega Pixel Underwater Digital Camera (Black)

good camera with some caveats3

I have used this product on three dives and still have mixed feeling about it. it is definitely a steal at the amazon price and i do not regret my purchase. the camera itself is easy to use and quite good in land use. in the underwater housing however the buttons are a little hard to push. this becomes an issue since the shutter button must be pushed half-way to get a light meter reading and i found this quite difficult. button responsiveness may improve over time though.

another issue was determining the proper settings for underwater photography. i used a sony u/w camera before the intova and it was fairly easy to figure out what setting worked and which did not. it was a little harder with the intova but after a couple of practice shots and dives a fairy competent photographer will get the hang of it.

video however was crystal clear and easier to shoot. the 640x480 resolution really makes a difference and the auto setting for the video clip were perfect- unlike the camera setting which required a few tweaks.

so would i recommend this product? yes if you have the patience to experiment with it a little. and of course nothing beats the value for money of intova products!

cheers

update:

i have figured out the settings for better u/w pictures and it does take gorgreous pictures as long as the subject is reached by an adequate light source (external flash or strobe)

video is also decent but is prone to flash as the other reviewer has described when it is focused on a subject with backround lighting. you also cannot adjust the viewing angle (telephoto-wide angle shots) during video recording.

all in all still a great buy.

i have modified my rating to 4 starsMore detail ...

Sealife DC1000 10 Megapixel Underwater / Land Camera in Removable Housing with 5X Optical Zoom (Black)

Some nice underwater features but color software needs improvement3

For a trip to the Yucatan I purchased the SeaLife DC1000 with single flash unit as we anticipated diving and also a Canon D10 to allow more options while snorkeling. The DC1000 has some nice features (push-button controls are generally easy to use underwater) and comes at a reasonable price for a dive-capable camera for those of us that have limited chances to do photography with scuba. In general the camera worked well and took some nice pictures while diving at 50 feet using the flash which is essential under these conditions. As noted by the prior review however its performance for shallow-water snorkeling could have been substantially better. I initially had problems with the flash under these conditions which frequently overwhelmed the image. After regular adjustment of the power flash pictures worked better but this means that one-chance shots (e.g. fish) may be lost. There are other adjustment options for the flash (macro vs. long-distance settings) that I did not have a chance to try which may improve results but the amount of adjusting to get a good flash result is frustrating given that the flash is supposed to be integrated into the camera system. Because of the erratic flash results I was getting I also explored alternative non-flash modes. This revealed the biggest negative of the camera--the "special" underwater color bias settings seem to function by just adding varying levels of red to everything whether the objects are red or not. After it became obvious that the underwater settings were generating unacceptable results I started instead taking pictures underwater with the land setting which of course creates images that are more blue than natural due to long-wavelength light attenuation. After returning home I explored whether I could salvage some of the images using Photoshop. This helped to a limited extent for the shots taken in the underwater setting but the excess red could not be entirely eliminated. In contrast when color balance/contrast filtering was applied to shots taken with the standard land setting the resulting image colors were excellent and true to life. So in the end the special underwater adjustment features seem more of a sales gimmick that will send unsuspecting users astray rather than a strong selling point. In the future SeaLife should consider teaming up with Adobe to come up with a quality image filter algorithm. An option that I did not try was to manually set the white balance using the included white board (another thing to hold onto in the water...)--this might fix the problem. Other negatives to the camera were an annoying delayed response when trying to change zoom settings and a very slow focus/shutter response resulting in missed pictures. As I used the camera more it seemed to me that the photo was taken when I released the button rather than when I initially depressed it as one would expect in other cameras.

So how did it compare to the Canon D10 performance? Without the fancy underwater settings the Canon took expected blue-biased photos that when filtered through the contrast/color balance filters of Photoshop produced excellent vivid true to life shots. In general the image sharpness of the D10 was slightly better than the DS1000 as perhaps might be expected when using a product from a top-tier camera company. Bottom line: if you are just going to snorkel during the day go with the Canon D10 and save yourself a good chunk of money. If you are planning to dive or night snorkel then the DS1000 may be the way to go but expect to experiment/practice with the equipment before you get consistent results.More detail ...

Suprema Digital Dive Camera 5 Megapixel

Unbeatable value4

Was shipped very promptly. Hasn't leaked one bit and I've been down to 20m. Comes with a little colour filter that fits over the lens like a lens cap for restoring the red/blue balance at deeper depths and also protects the lens. Detector array is CMOS rather than CCD (that's how they can make it so cheap) so camera is a little on the slow side. Quite a few blurry images deeper down where the lighting is dimmer and when there was strong surge/current. But pictures taken in calmer clearer water with better lighting came out fantastic. Much better than disposable underwater cameras (and only 2-3x the price!) and of course being digital you can feel free to go trigger happy. The camera can also record video. Customer support has been outstanding. Everytime I send an email I get a detailed response within 12hrs or so. Suggest ordering some replacement o-rings since the housing only comes with one and the o-ring apparently should be replaced every year or so. I highly recommend this camera if you're just looking for a small cheap reliable underwater camera to take a few casual shots while diving/snorkeling.More detail ...

Aquapac Desicant Sachets

Dried out my iPod5

My iPod Shuffle (2nd generation) occasionally gets damp when I listen to it while running. After a while the device started acting up (playback would stop even though no buttons were pressed). I suspected moisture might be the problem and thought exposure to desicants just might help out. Sure enough after receiving these desicant sachets and sealing the iPod in a small plastic bag with them the problem went away. Still the problem recurs now and then but each time seems to go away after exposure to these desicants. So a small investment appears to be allowing me to squeeze more life out of a more expensive product.More detail ...

Ikelite WD-4 Wide Angle Conversion Dome to fit Ikelite Housing for the Canon G10

The WD-4 Wide Angle Conversion Dome provides all of the benefits of a dome port underwater without the limitations. The WD-4 simply slides onto the standard port of the Ikelite housing for the G10 no modification to or replacement of the housing's original port is necessary. The WD-4 can be removed and replaced underwater so there is no limit to the camera's zoom or macro capabilities. Approximately 3/4 of the camera's zoom range can be used with the dome in place. The conversion dome corrects for the refractive magnification of the flat port underwater to restore the camera's original angle of coverage. The WD-4 and Canon G10 combination provides 28mm angle of coverage with incredibly crisp corners. In comparison this option is effectively as wide as and sharper overall than a housed Canon G9 underwater with external wide angle lens.More detail ...
